GHANA ELECTRICITY CHALLENGES: WHY GRIDCo REDUCED ECG POWER SUPPLY
Ghana Grid company (GRIDCo) has reduced its power supply to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) which has impacted the electricity supply to consumers in parts of Tema, Kpone, Kpong and some areas in the Eastern Region.
Recently, in the past months, there has been erratic power supply across the country. This has resulted with many Ghanaians demanding that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Energy Ministry release a load-shedding timetable so they can plan their lives.
However, Both the Energy Ministry and the ECG have denied “dumsor” claims. As such, they insisted that there was no need for a timetable.
As at March 28 2024, ECG in two separate statement said that a reduction in power supply to the Smelter 2 Bulk Supply Point and the Kpong Bulk Supply Point by GRIDCo, have resulted in outages in a number of communities and industries served by the two bulk supply point.
These reduction affected facilities like Ghana Steel, Palace Mall, Furniture City, Lovely Transport, Kpone Barrier, Kingdom Transport, GPHA Terminal at Kpone, Sethi Realty, Adodakpi Farms, Bediako, Golf City and its environs.
Meanwhile other areas like Yilo Krobo, Lower Manya Krobo, Adukrom Booster Station, Asutsuare Township, Volivo, Golden Exotics, Akorley Pumping Station, Teye Kwame, Glamour Farms, PW Quarries, Eastern Quarries, Twin Quarries, Juapong, Akwamufie, Frankadua, Anum, Nudu, Boso, Dodi Asantekrom, Kisiful and its environs where also affected.
However, the statement release did not provide a specific time range for the restoration which is another challenges on its own.
WHY THE REDUCTION IN POWER SUPPLY
According to report, no official reason was announced as to why the reduction took place, but rumors has it that it was due to technical challenges at the Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo).
This on its own is a worrying sign as it shows how that both Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are not working in partnership to resolve issues that is affecting the nation electiricty.
Meanwhile, The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has expressed concerns over the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) alleged discrepancies in its public announcements regarding the recent power outages nationwide.
However, the IES, in a statement signed and released by its Executive Director, Nana Amoasi VII on April 1, expressed shock at ECG’s ‘misleading statement.’
“In the recent statement, the ECG sought to equate “stable national power supply” to “stable national grid,” both of which are non-existent in our present power sub-sector.”
“The IES is appalled by the extent to which the ECG is permitting the powers that be to frustrate its eligible business and to embarrass itself in the eye of the public. These public relation (PR) gimmicks by the ECG are unwarranted, disgusting, and diversionary; capable of denting the reputation and credibility of the institution,” the IES stated.
